Understanding the science behind health

If you are interested in staying healthy and ensuring that your body runs as well and as smoothly as possible, then it’s important to recognize that what this comes down to is science.

Understanding how food, exercise and supplements affect your body basically comes down to a simple matter of biology and chemistry, and the better you understand these subjects, the more you will be able to choose between good changes for your health and bad ones.

The problem is though that all of us are not scientists, and not all of us have all the requisite knowledge to really know what’s going on inside our bodies. So in these cases, what can we do to ensure that we choose the right health procedures and products? And how can we differentiate between the ‘good science’ and the ‘bad science’?

Who to Believe?

Well first of all it’s important to recognize that there is actually no single authority on what’s best for our health, and that actually no-one really knows for sure how best to achieve the right results. Take for instance something as simple as bodybuilding – read around different forums and you will see some people advising that a product doesn’t work and others advising that the same product is actually very good.

Some people will say you should arch your back doing a bench press whereas others will say you shouldn’t.

This is simply the nature of science, and actually this is good science – because the whole point of science is that you are open to new ideas and that you are constantly trying to disprove theories (and never trying to confirm them which is a biased approach by nature).

There are constantly paradigm shifts in science and new information is constantly coming to light – so be very weary of anything or anyone that seems too certain that something works.

At the same time you also need to consider the source and what their motives might be. Many people are suspicious of doctors believing that they get a commission on prescribing certain medications. Do note though that your doctors have better expertise and knowledge on this matter than perhaps anyone else – and that doctors in the UK where healthcare is not privatized will still generally prescribe the same things. When you read that something is natural or that it is an ‘alternative remedy‘ – those people are still trying to make money but they don’t also have the same qualifications.

Do we really need all those supplements?

Doing the Research

Ultimately though it is still only you who is in a position to really make the final decision on what you think will work for you and what you think won’t, and that’s why it’s so important to listen to advice, but also to do your own research and to think critically as well.

Fortunately we today have access to perhaps the very best source of information and debate on these matters – the web. So before you start any new medication like a unheard of acne scar treatment, or any new training program, or any new diet like a raw food diet: read online as much as you can about it and read reviews and discussion on the subject as well as the underlying science behind it and behind the problem you are trying to improve.

There are also many fitness machines that can help you in this are. Check out these smooth elliptical reviews for example.
