When a child swallows food in haste, or some other non-edible object like a coin or a marble, it can often get lodged in the wind pipe and cause some serious repercussions. Administer 4-5 back blows firmly between the shoulder blades repeat 2-3 times till the object gets dislodged. Try around 4-5 abdominal trusts by holding the child from the waist above their belly button, and pull with a slight jerk upwards and inwards. Seek medical assistance immediately if object doesn’t get dislodged after three rounds of back blows and abdominal thrusts.

Asthma attacks in kids can be really severe and should not be taken lightly. When an asthma attack occurs, make sure you reassure the child and help him ease down. Make the child sit in a comfortable position and make him/her take the required medication. Make sure you stay with the child and help him relax and breathe slowly. Make sure you keep a close check on the victim’s rate of breathing and pulse and if problem persists, do not hesitate to seek medical help.

Insect bites are common with children as it is quite likely for a lonely child to encounter an unsuspecting insect resulting in a bite or a sting. Make sure you grab a pair of tweezers to remove the sting. One can also use a credit card to remove the sting. Care should be taken not to break the sting and squeeze the wound a little to take out the venom. Applying calamine lotion is advisable as it soothse the affected area and relieves the pain a little bit. Make sure to approach a physician immediately in case of spider, scorpion, and bee stings.

While playing, it is common for child to run around wild and lose their body fluids in form of sweat. This can often lead to dehydration, which can be severe and should be acutely treated. Dehydration often involves certain symptoms such as dry or sticky mouth, dry eyes, discoloration of lips, dry skin and fatigue and lethargy etc. Make sure to rehydrate the child immediately, with water and liquids high in oral rehydration salts and glucose is advised by most first aid trainers. In severe cases, administering a ringer’s solution is a beneficial safety tip.

Immediately place the burnt area under running water and wrap it in a wet towel till pain persists. Clean area lightly with mild disinfectant and apply antiseptic lotion is always advisable. In case of burns due to spilled liquid, apply toothpaste on the burnt area to relieve pain and sooth the burnt skin. If the burns look deep in color and skin is either white or brown, consult medical help immediately. Never use cold compressed on burns as it can lead to swelling and infection. Applying anti biotic cream and covering the affected area with a clean gauge till the wound heals is the best approach to treating burns according to leading first aid trainers and training institutions.

A sprain and a strain seldom require major medical attention but one often needs to make sure if the child suffers from any sort of major or minor fracture or muscle tear. If the injured area has swelling and the child is experiencing difficulty in moving it. Applying compression packs on sprains or strains can help ease the pain. In case of suspected fractures, secure the limb with splints and seek medical assistance. In case of neck or back injury, try not to move the child unless you’re an expert. Call for medical assistance immediately and try not to let the child move as any wrong movement can cause nerve damage.

While most minor cuts do not pose a threat to your child, a few caused by objects such as rusted nail or wire can cause infections. It is important to provide the essential first aid for minor cuts, bruises or scrapes by cleaning the wound with a disinfectant and applying an antiseptic solution is a must. It is often advisable to cover the wounds with an adhesive sterile bandage till the scab formation occurs. For large cuts the first step is to immediately cover the wound with a clean cloth and press it lightly to stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding stops clean the wound with disinfectant and apply antiseptic solution. If the cut is more than half an inch long or deep, seek medical assistance immediately. In case of splinter or glass shard, remove the object with a pair of tweezers first, before applying first aid.

Nose bleeding can be a common problem with children, especially during summers. Due to excessive heat the blood vessels inside the nose can get ruptured and can result in a nosebleed. The blood vessels can also get ruptured due to injury to the head or the nose and can cause a lot of blood loss. A child with cold and who is constantly blowing a runny nose can also cause the nose to bleed. Pinch the nose from above the nostrils and sit in a forward leaning position to drain the excess blood out. Pinching the soft part of the nose can help ease the child down. Drinking cold water is beneficial at stopping nosebleeds. If the nose bleeding persists for more than 30 minutes consult a doctor immediately.
