Anybody that suffers from chronic migraines will know just how much of an impact they have on your life. When a migraine starts, there’s nothing else to do but phone in sick, turn off the lights and stay in bed. It’s an affliction that strikes many, and while there are plenty of pain relief cures on the market, a lot of people are finding salvation in alternative therapies.

Symptoms range from nausea and vomiting to throbbing headache pain – and when it strikes you may as well write off your day. Migraines are not just ordinary headaches so they need to be dealt with in a special type of way. Many people are finding coping mechanisms that keep them out of the doctor’s surgery and off strong pain relief medication. Here are some great natural ways to alleviate the symptoms of migraine:

Avoid the Triggers

Certain things are known to be triggers in bringing on a migraine. These include coffee, tea, alcohol, smoking and fluorescent lights. If you can avoid these things throughout your day you’re not putting yourself at greater risk than you need to.

Sometimes, oral contraceptives can bring on migraines too, so if you are struggling it may be worth trying out a different type.

Often migraines are linked to allergies and food intolerances, so if you suspect that this could be the underlying cause, it’s well worth experimenting with cutting different food groups out of your diet. See this article on allergy remedies.

Herbs are very effective in preventing migraines. Feverfew and butterbur extract are great preventers, although they won’t cure a migraine once it has come on.

Alternative Therapies

Hydrotherapy for Migraine Headaches

Water is a great healer, and if you stand in a hot shower for a few minutes (as hot as you can take it) and then switch it to cold, this will improve your circulation no end. Swap between the two extremes for a long as possible and this will remove toxins. Alternatively, swap between a hot face cloth and a cold one on your forehead or the back of your neck.

Drinking water will also help you feel better. Avoid any other drink other than plain old water and drink loads of it – this is perhaps the fastest way to flush all those nasty toxins out of your body. Eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables too. Avoid sugary food and drinks – these won’t help.

Pressure Points to Alleviate Migraines

Find pressure points on your body that help when you press them. This is great for relieving tension, and the best place to try pressing is the soft bit between your thumb and first finger. Also, press around different points on your head and neck and see if you can find places that relieve tension when they are pressed. Remember to breathe deeply at all times – the more oxygen that gets to your body, the better.

Home Remedies

1. Feverfew: This plant is one of the best home remedies to use for migraines because it reduces the tension and constriction in blood vessels. This tension is believed to expand and press blood vessels against nerves, causing migraines. Feverfew also contains parthenolide, an aspirin-like substance that reduces inflammation and pain. Take 1 ounce of feverfew flowers and steep in a pint of boiling water. Strain and drink half a cup twice daily.
2.Cayenne pepper: Pepper contains a pain killing compound known as capsaicin. Dissolve half a teaspoon of cayenne in 4 ounces of warm water. Dip a cotton swab in it, and apply into each nostril till you feel the burning sensation. Once the heat subsides, your migraine will have disappeared as well.
3.Fish oil: Fish oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids among other active substances that act as a remedy for migraines. Drinking fish oil reduces inflammation, steadies the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and prevents clotting. Fish oil can help with migraines by reducing inflammation in blood vessels in the brain. Mix one tablespoon of fish oil with one cup of orange juice for a better taste before drinking it. Alternatively, you may take fish oil capsules as directed.
4.Ginger root: Chemical messengers known as prostaglandins are synthesized in body cells, where they mediate inflammation and pain sensitivity. Ginger root is a natural inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in cells. Taking it will prevent the pain sensation and inflammation associated with migraines. Take a few slices of ginger root and simmer In 2 cups of hot water for half an hour. Sip slowly while also inhaling the steam.
5.Butterbur: Butterbur is part of the daisy plant family, and has been used as a reliever for migraines for a long time. Butterbur root contains a high concentration of chemicals that act by reducing inflammation and acting as beta blockers. This controls blood pressure and capillary spasms that cause migraines. The plant extract is usually sold in herbal shops, and has been processed to remove harmful toxins that naturally exist in the plant.
6.Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil is a natural relaxant and pain reliever. It is applied directly on the temples, forehead, and around the jaw to sooth migraines. It provides a cooling feeling on the skin too, although it may irritate some people. If that happens, dilute it with water or some olive oil.
7.Apple cider vinegar: This has been used for ages to relieve migraines. Take a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar and pour into a large bowl. Add boiling water, and cover your head with a towel over the bowl. This will allow you to breath in the steam. Do this for about ten minutes. Your migraine will subside.
