Digestive System and its Diseases

Digestive_system_diagram_en.svgWhatever food we eat has to be broken down into smaller parts for digestion. This is the main function of digestive system in our body. This body system consists of a number of organs including mouth, stomach, intestines, rectum and anus. Each of these organs has its own role in digestion. This category includes the articles related to the digestive system including its functioning and importance. You can also read the articles related to digestive system disorders in this category.

The movement of food in the digestive tract is caused with the help of peristalsis. The digestion starts as soon as we swallow the food. It involves mixing of saliva with the food in the mouth that helps the digestive process. The food then goes to stomach through the esophagus. In the stomach, the food is stored and is acted on by several digestive fluids. The digestive juices secreted in the stomach are acidic in nature and secrete an enzyme that results in digestion of protein. Thereafter the food is absorbed by the intestine walls and waste material goes to colon. Various other organs of the body also help in the digestion. For instance, liver helps by secreting a digestive juice called bile.

It is recommended to adopt healthy eating habits in order to keep the digestion good. Neglecting this aspect can result in a number of digestive system diseases. One such disease is heartburn which is caused due to stress and anxiety. Heartburn can give birth to Acid reflux too. See our article on acid reflux remedies Another common disease is ulcerative colitis which can be very fatal. If not taken care of in early stages, surgery may be required. It is believed to be caused due to bad eating habits and lack of physical work. Finally, there is gastritis caused due to a bacteria.
