PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome)
PMS or Pre Menstrual Syndrome can occur during or prior to a female’s monthly menstrual cycle. Symptoms can include bloating, fever, back pain, stomach cramps, leg cramps, fatigue and headache. Some women have more severe cases than others, such as PMDD or Pre-Menstural Dysphoric Disorder, which produces more severe pain, irritability and even, depression.
PMS
It is estimated that 70-80% of females experience some variation of PMS one to two weeks prior to their menstrual cycle, or during. This can include and increased sense of irritability and emotional imbalance. These tendencies are proven to increase with age. So, it may be the case that a women who had no issues with PMS in her teens, may experience increased levels as she ages.
PMS Symptoms
Symptoms of PMS can include cramping, especially in the leg, stomach and back area. There is fatigue, nausea, headache, fever at times and even vomiting. In addition, there may be constipation, arthritis, crying spells and bruising more easily. These symptoms can last anywhere from hours to days. There may even be an increased irritability, and inability to deal with everyday trials in a healthy manner.
PMDD
This is a much more severe case of PMS and affects only 3-8% of women. Symptoms can include excessive fatigue, vomiting, increased feelings of depression, panic attacks, intense anxiety and binge eating. It is thought that some of the causes include a lack of serotonin traveling to the brain as well as insufficient calcium levels.
PMS Treatments
Knowing the timing of your menstrual cycle is instrumental in helping to manage your symptoms. Some natural treatments can include serotonin, calcium and Omega-3 supplements. Furthermore, alfalfa or asparagus can help alleviate bloating. Potassium supplements, or that found in bananas can help ward off fatigue. Eating low-fat, high protein meals helps to give you more energy. Treating your symptoms early and consistently, can be the key to minimizing them.
