Insomnia - A Quick Overview

Insomnia can be described as the difficulty in maintaining or finding sleep, or both. ‘nsomnia’ is a latin word from ‘nsomnis’ which means ‘sleepless’. Insomnia can be termed as a disorder where one is unable to get enough sleep due to one or more factors. Insomnia can affect anyone at any age but it mostly occurs in the elderly. People who have Insomnia often depict symptoms like daytime drowsiness, fatigue, decreased mental clarity among others. Insomnia can be Short term lasting up to 3 weeks or Long term lasting for over 3-4 weeks. When it is long term, it can lead to depression, memory problems and irritability


There are 2 types of Insomnia. Acute and Chronic Insomnia. The Acute Insomnia when symptoms last for a short period of time while Chronic Insomnia is when the symptoms last for quite a longer period of time (generally for over a month). It can as well be classified either as primary or secondary insomnia. In Primary is a condition attributed to another disorder while In secondary its where it can be traced back to its source, for example, use of medications, abuse of drugs or depression.

Causes of Insomnia

Stressors like beginning a job or change of the daily routine can cause Insomnia. Anxiety about lack of sleep can lead to recurring circle where a person can worry more and more about lacking sleep thus leading to insomnia.

There are many other factors that can cause insomnia, they include: Drinking coffee before bed, having a heavy meal, use of certain medications, drug abuse, sleeping in a room full of light or noise among others.

Most of these causes of Insomnia can be prevented by use of simple home remedies.
