The Pleurisy category is a sub-category of the Respiratory Conditions category.

Pleurisy - Causes and Symptoms

Pleurisy occurs when the two layers of pleura (lung membranes) get inflamed due to some conditions. The function of pleura is to protect the lung and reduce the frictional effect between them when they expand and contract while breathing. The pleura has two layers; the visceral pleura which covers the lung and the parietal pleura, which forms a lining barrier to cover the internal walls of the chest. The two layers are kept lubricated by the pleural fluid. Accumulation of this fluid can cause pleurisy.

Causes Of Pleurisy

Pleurisy can be viral or bacterial depending upon the causes. The major causes of this condition include exposure to ammonia, inflammation around the heart (pericarditis), chest muscle strain, fungal infections and improper oxygen or blood supply to the lung. People suffering from cancer, particularly lung or breast cancer may also be affected by this condition. Moreover, fractures on the ribs or lung trauma due to drug reactions, obstructed lymph nodes, blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), and accident, can damage tissues of the lungs, thereby causing pleurisy.

Symptoms Of Pleurisy

The initial symptoms of this condition include chest pains, particularly while having deep breaths. It’s often preceded by a dull ache or burning sensation in the surrounding areas of the lungs. You can also experience skin discoloration around the chest, fever, chills, unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, and burning sensation in the shoulders, abdomen and neck. Others also experience dry coughs followed by rapid shallow breaths or shortness of breath.

The severe symptoms of this condition include intense chest pain, very high fever, chest tightness, unexplained fatigue and rapid heart rate.

The diagnosis of this lung condition depends on its cause. There are several treatment methods that can be used to alleviate the symptoms of this condition. Most doctors often prescribe antibiotics. Some natural home remedies may be also be used to treat this condition.
