Fungal Conditions - An Overview

Each year, millions of people around the world are diagnosed with a type of fungal condition. There are three main types of fungal infections that affect people; superficial, systemic, and opportunistic.

Superficial - This type of infection is not usually serious; however, it can lower a person’s quality of life and turn into a systemic infection if the proper treatment isn’t provided. The infection affects the mucous membranes or skin and causes conditions such as thrush, vaginitis, and athlete’s foot to develop.

Systemic - Unlike superficial fungal infections, systemic infections can cause serious disease and even be life-threatening. This type of infection develops after fungi enter the bloodstream. It is caused by an invasive organism such as histoplasma or by an opportunistic organism that takes advantage of weak immune systems.

Opportunistic - Opportunistic infections are more common in people with compromised immune systems, as fungi are able to attack without much effort.

Symptoms

Symptoms associated with fungal conditions vary depending on the area that is affected, severity of the infection, and additional factors.

Athlete’s Foot - Itchiness, Dry/Flaky Skin, Yellowing and detachment of the nails.
Jock Itch - Itchiness in groin area. Irritation, Scaly Skin
Ringworm - Itchy Scalp, Red ring-shaped spot in affected area. Loss of Hair
Oral Thrush - Painful/Bleeding Gum sores in mouth, Yellowish lesions in the throat and other parts of the mouth.
Vaginal Thrush - Vaginal discharge similar to cottage cheese in appearance. Irritation, Itchiness, Burning Sensation with Urination
Fungal Gastroenteritis - Nausea, Vomiting, Loose Stool/Diarrhea

Treatment Options

The first step in getting the proper treatment is obtaining a diagnosis. Once your doctor has made an accurate diagnosis, you will be given various treatment options. Anti-fungal medications are usually the first choice of treatment for most doctors; however, there are natural remedies you can use at home that are just as effective. For many people, home remedies are a great alternative, as drugs are often only a temporary fix and don’t prevent infections from reoccurring.
