Irritable Bowel Syndrome - A General Rundown

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or the IBS is the disorder that is happening to the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. The GI functions as the tube or the path where the food enters the body, goes through the path of the digestive system, and finally leaves the body. The GI tract is the place where the food is broken down.

When people suffer from IBS, they basically don’t suffer from a particular disease. The IBS is a group of symptoms that are happening together. The most common IBS symptoms are diarrhea, stomach cramp, abdominal discomfort that can lead to pain, and constipation. Sometimes, both symptoms can happen altogether. The pain or discomfort can happen:

  • When people have to do more bowel movement activities than the regular ones
  • When their stool is somehow more watery or looser than usual. It is also possible that the stool is lumpier.
  • It is also possible that the pain would go away immediately after they are doing the bowel movement.

When the stomach discomfort is accompanied by the constipation, the symptoms may include:

  • Dry and hard stool
  • Not regularly have bowel movement, especially not on daily basis
  • Straining when doing the bowel movement

The chronic IBS disease usually lasts for longer period of time, but the symptoms come and go as they please. It is possible that people suffer from such issue if they have suffered from the symptoms for about 3 months. They should check their condition immediately.

Dealing with IBS can be done through medical treatments or through home remedies. Home remedies can be a soothing treatment since it is natural and has small possibility of side effect. For example, the peppermint can be used to calm down the intestinal muscles. However, it is advisable to consult the doctors first before consuming the peppermint since it can interact with other types of medications.
