  • In extreme cases heartburn can even cause a sore throat, hoarseness, or chronic cough
  • The feeling of a lump in the chest or throat, as if piece of some food has stuck there
  • Bitter taste in the mouth

What Causes Heartburn?


Acid reflux or GERD is caused when liquid contents in the stomach back up, or reflux up into the throat. The liquid in acid reflux has pepsin (an enzyme), strong stomach acids, and green colored liquid called bile. These are strong acids and can inflame and even damage the esophagus lining.

The best way to deal with heartburn is to make some changes in your lifestyle and eating habits. You should identify foods that trigger heartburn and then try to avoid them. If you immediately sleep after taking your meal, you should stop this immediately, as lying down or sleeping can also trigger heartburn attack.
