Multiple Sclerosis - A Basic Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease which injures the nerves of the spinal cord and brain. There are many factors which can trigger this disease, for example: genetic, environmental, and immunological factor.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

In people with MS disease, the nerves of the nervous system degenerate. This disease affects the performance of the myelin. In normal people, myelin is useful to provide an insulation for nerves and improve the conduction of impulses through the nerves. Another benefit of the myelin is its ability to maintain the healthy nerves. This disease break down the function of the myelin. Therefore, the nerve function decreases all the time. As the result, people with MS disease will not have good nervous systems. They are not able to see, walk, write properly because they do not have healthy nerve systems.

This disease is usually diagnosed between 20 and 50 years old. However, there are some cases where this MS disease happens on the children and elder people. Men are less likely to be affected by this disease than women.

There are several types of the MS disease, such as exacerbation of multiple sclerosis, relapsing-remitting MS, primary progressive MS, and secondary progressive MS. Those types are different based on the different symptoms. There are some cases, where the MS disease is mild. In this case, people with MS will realize that they have this disease after several years having the same disease.
