Transpersonal Therapy - A Brief Overview

Transpersonal therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that primarily perceives soul as the individual identity. This therapy improves the study of spirituality, mind-body relations, human transformation and consciousness and help to shift the focus on the “Essential Self”. The term “transpersonal” is derived from the Latin word “trans” which means, beyond and through and “persona” which implies mask or personality. The therapy methods are essentially holistic and encompass every single levels of human experience that includes the spiritual quest to reveal the “being” behind the “personality”.

This therapy attempts to heal mental disorders and behavioral issues by viewing individuals as souls or spiritual beings that possess motivations and traits outside of the absolute understanding of the standard physical realm. A transpersonal psychotherapist would typically focus on peak experiences, spiritual self-development, mystical experiences, metaphysical experiences and other systemic trance of living.


Transpersonal therapy offers many benefits which include, exploration and self-expression in a supportive and non-judgmental space; learning to deal with life’s fears, stress and challenges, increased level of self-acceptance and self-awareness; accessing wisdom, inner strengths, resources and guidance; an enhanced sense of meaning, direction and purpose; a deeper association to one’s real self and spirituality; a greater sense of well-being, health and wholeness; a journey through healing, growth and transformation and so on.

The final goal of this psychotherapy is not just the alleviation of anguish, but the integration of emotional, physical, mental, social, spiritual and intellectual aspects of the patient’s well being and deals with the six elements equally for the treatment purpose. The aim of this therapy is to direct the patients through the journey of these six areas, fostering them to reignite and intensify growth, leading to better self-understanding and limitless possibilities.

In short, transpersonal therapy believes that, with all these self-realization comes the sense of rationality and deeper sense of fulfillment and peace in one’ life. It can banish unwanted emotions, cease destructive behaviors and habits and considerably enhance one’s ability to experience peace, love, positive relationships and joy.
