Reflexology - A Quick Overview

Akmanthor-reflexology art pictureZone therapy also commonly referred to as reflexology is application of pressure to particular areas and points on the feet, ears or hands. Those who practice this approach believe that these reflex points correspond to various body systems and organs. Pressing these areas affects organs that correspond to them as well as the overall health of the person. This field holds that a particular area of the foot should correspond to a particular point in the bladder. The practitioner applies pressure using thumbs or fingers to the appropriate region so as to affect the functioning of the bladder.

Reflexology is not aimed at curing or diagnosing health disorders rather it is an alternative or complementary therapy used to assist during treatment of conditions such as cancer, kidney issues, asthma, anxiety, diabetes, headaches and cardiovascular problems. This alternative approach has become very popular in Asia and Europe not only for complementary purposes but also as a preventative measure. Some countries such as Denmark have embraced this concept by employing reflexologists in companies and municipalities since 1990s. Studies have shown that this practice has led to low absenteeism and reduced sick leave not to mention significant savings for employers.

Reflexologists might focus on specific problems on the feet, ears or hands or perform a general integrated session. Whatever approach the practitioner uses their goal is to release stress and congestion in the nervous system as well as balance body energy. This alternative approach is closely related to acupressure and acupuncture since it works with body energy by stimulating certain points in the body. These alternative therapies use reflex in order to affect other body parts. Reflexology is usually confused with massage since both of them use touch to bring relief to the human body. Although they use similar methods to affect various body parts and organs these approaches are quite different from each other.
