Acupressure

Based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and practice for thousands of years in China, acupressure comes to modern man as an alternative medicine whose curative techniques use the same acupuncture points but minus the needles. It is one of several Asian body therapies (ABT) that include Tui Na and Shitsu and is mostly resorted to as form of therapeutic massage that can heal certain ailments, relieve stress and generally restore health and wellness. . There are practitioners who provide the service in various clinics but they can also visit you at home.

Theory Behind Acupressure

Feet_on_Acupressure_MatTCM theory defines acupressure points or acupoints that lie along invisible energy channels or meridians in your body. The philosophy behind it is that energy from a life force or “Chi” flows freely through these meridians each of which is associated with a body organ or organ system. There is negative energy (Yin) and positive energy (Yang) and the object of acupressure is to regulate these forces to ensure balanced flows. Maintaining a balanced energy flow ensures optimum health. If a meridian is blocked or goes out of balance with the rest, an illness occurs. These meridians are the same energy channels targeted in acupuncture. And because energy applies not just to the body but also to the mind, several practitioners believe that restoring balance can also maintain a healthy attitude, mind, emotions and the spirit.

How it is Practiced

Acupressure heating techniques involve the application of pressure on these acupoints to unblock and stimulate the flow of energy to heal the body through a natural response. Practitioners apply their palms, fingers, elbow, feet and special devices to provide the right pressure to these acupoints as well as engage in stretching and massage. In an acupressure session, the patient lies with light clothing on a cushioned massage table that allows the practitioner to gently work on those acupoints in the body. A typical session at home or a clinic lasts about one hour and you may need a few sessions for the best results.
