exfoliation skin care from the kitchen

Enhance your natural beauty using natural skin care products from your kitchen to create scrubs, masks and more. Natural fruit acids and extracts are used by many cosmetic companies to promote exfoliation, but they, like a multitude of other products, may already be in your pantry or fridge. You may already use colloidal oatmeal or baking soda to soothe hives, or vinegar for a sunburn, but these are just the tip of the iceberg. Milk, eggs, honey, pineapples, avocados and more can be used to moisturize skin and create masks that rival the results of name brand cosmetics.

There are many reasons to go natural when it comes to skincare. One of the most important is protecting our skin which is our body’s largest organ. Knowing what goes onto our body is as important as knowing what goes in. If you enjoy natural or organic food, you may want to experiment with the following natural skin care products:

Honey

Honey is an all-around natural skin care miracle. It is a natural humectant, working to deliver moisture to your hair, face and body and is added to many masks and hair moisturizers. Additional properties that contribute to its popularity are skin protecting flavonoids, anti-bacterial properties and being considered an anti-inflammatory. It is not recommended for children under 2 though.
Uses for honey:

  • Moisturizing Face Mask: Use raw honey by itself for 20 minutes, or combine with yogurt, cream, fruits and essential oils to create luxurious masks to moisturize and exfoliate skin.
  • Blemish Treatment: Dab raw honey on surface blemishes overnight to help fight bacteria. It also soothes irritation and helps heal skin.
  • Burn and Scar Treatment: Long before modern medicine, burns were often treated with honey and this is still an effective cure for small burns. Clean the area, apply a generous amount of raw honey and cover with gauze and bandage. Redress as necessary until blister is gone. Honey can be applied throughout the healing process to limit scarring and infection. Honey has even held up to scientific scrutiny, touted as possibly being more effective on small burns than antibiotic ointment, though large scale research has yet to be conducted in the U.S.

Natural Oils

Our skin produces and uses oils to moisturize and balance itself. Oil is a natural part of our bodies and it should not be feared when it comes to skin care. Natural oils found in coconut, olive, and variety of plants provide the skin with many of benefits.

Coconut Oil

Many expectant mothers are familiar with the benefits of coconut oil. It is popular for use as a safe massage oil during pregnancy to help diminish stretch marks. Make a healthy homemade body or facial scrub using 1 cup of brown sugar and 1/3 cup virgin coconut oil. Not only does it contain natural quantities of vitamin K and E, but coconut oil is also considered beneficial for skin protection and repair.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is excellent for removing eyeshadow and mascara while moisturizing the surrounding skin. Contact wearers will want to be careful to keep it out of their eyes, perhaps using a warm washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. Try combining ½ cup sea salt with 1 cup of olive oil to use as an exfoliator for face and body. Hot oil treatments used to create a luxurious head of hair can be easily created at home. Wash your hair, coat with warm olive oil, cover with warm towels and let soak for 30-60 minutes, wash thoroughly and condition. Make sure you are using virgin, all-natural olive oil when it comes to your skin, expeller pressed.

Others to Consider

While not necessarily found in most kitchens, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, argan oil, and tea tree oil are other natural oils that offer great results for fairly low prices. Jojoba, grapeseed and sunflower oils are good moisturizers, while argan oil is reputed to be anti-aging, and tea tree helps fight all types of blemishes.

Whole Fruits

Fresh fruits can work wonders on your face, from tightening pores to exfoliating dead skin. Try using a mix to create your own spa facial by blending or mashing fresh fruits and combining them with yogurt, oatmeal, honey and other wholesome products around your kitchen.

  • Avocados work wonders on hair and skin, if you can bring yourself to spare an extra from the table! Mash half an avocado with ground oats and milk or yogurt for an exfoliating mask.

  • Pineapples contain natural acids and enzymes that help improve the appearance of skin and slow aging. Use the fresh juice as a simple mask or combine the fruit with other items (leave on for 3-5 minutes total).
  • Lemons are also used as natural skin and hair lighteners, including homemade scrubs containing lemon and sugar or baking soda to remove fake tan lines. Lemon can also be added to other masks to aid brightening.
  • Papayas are also rich in skin smoothing enzymes, and fresh fruit makes an amazing mask, especially when paired with pineapple. You can use the fruit itself or rub the leftover peel on your skin to get the benefits.
  • Bananas can be mashed and added to masks for dry skin. Don’t just toss your banana peel either, as the you can rub the peel on your skin to help with blemishes, or help heal warts, and soothe bug bites or poison ivy.
  • Tomatoes offer an excellent remedy for oily skin. Take a whole tomato half and rub on your problem areas, leaving juice on for 10-20 minutes. It can also be combined with citrus, avocado, honey and yogurt for added benefits.
  • Grapes are well known for their antioxidants and are popular additions to high end skin care products. Make your own skin cleanser by massaging halved grapes gently into skin to remove impurities. Grapes can also be added to masks and various astringents made with tea and citrus.
